Sherwin Hansen, age 92 of Northfield, passed away Wednesday morning, October 4, 2017, at the Care Center of the Northfield Retirement Community. Sherwin Harold Hansen was born September 4, 1925, in Iowa. He grew up in Lakefield, Minnesota, with his parents Torbjorn and Hansena and sister Astrid. Sherwin Hansen, age 92 of Northfield, passed away Wednesday morning, October 4, 2017, at the Care Center of the Northfield Retirement Community.

Sherwin Harold Hansen was born September 4, 1925, in Iowa. He grew up in Lakefield, Minnesota, with his parents Torbjorn and Hansena and sister Astrid. Sherwin’s father, the Reverend Torbjorn, was pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lakefield. After graduating from Lakefield High School in 1943, Sherwin enlisted in the US Navy and served until May of 1946. He was in the Officer Candidate School at Louisiana Polytechnical Institute. While Sherwin served in the military, his family moved to Webster, Minnesota, where his father was pastor of Solor Lutheran Church. When he was on leave from the Navy visiting his family in Webster, the dashing young sailor met the lovely young bookkeeper, Elna Halverson. They married at Solor Lutheran on June 12. 1947. The marriage ceremony was performed by Sherwin’s father. At the time they were married, Sherwin was a student at St. Olaf College when he graduated in June 1950 with a major in Economics and Sociology.

Sherwin worked for Pacific Gamble Robinson Co. in Minneapolis where he was an assistant manager. He was then employed by Ashland Chemical Company as an accountant and business manager. He also worked for the State of Minnesota on the Legislative Building Commission and later as Special Service Coordinator for the Hastings Veterans Home. He retired in September of 1990.

Elna and Sherwin were members of the Trondhjem Lutheran Church for years where he was on the church council and president of the congregation. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Northfield Care Center as it was being organized.

In 1992, Elna and Sherwin joined Woodlake Lutheran Church in Richfield where Sherwin served on the Global Mission Board and did volunteer service in Canada for Eagle Wings. He and Elna enjoyed the Senior Fellowship programs and Wednesday morning Matins at Woodlake. In 2012, they moved from their home in Bloomington where they had lived for almost 50 years to Kildahl Park Point in Northfield and joined St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Preceded in death by his wife Elna; parents Torbjorn and Hansena; and sister Astrid.

Survived by 5 sisters-in-law Lyla Arneson of Northfield, Gloria (Arvid) Boyum of Kenyon, Margaret (Gene) Heglund of Columbia, MO, Arlys (Darrell) Wiese of Northfield, and Maxine Halverson of Northfield; nieces and nephews Ronald (Kathleen) Halverson, Kenneth (Cindy) Halverson, Diane (Al) Boyum, Patti (Tom) Murry, Kathy (Ken) Beckers, Karen (Steve) Miller, Renee Fredrickson, Theodore (Catherine) Arneson, Clair (Brenda) Boyum, Kaia (Patrick) Pelstring, Andrew (Nichole) Heglund, Siri (Richard) Geenen, Karla Miller, James (Diane) Wiese, Elaine Gravell, Tom (Fran) Peterson, Marie (Mohammad) Abeditari, and Lori Peterson

Funeral services will be 11:00AM Monday, October 9, 2017, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield. Interment with Military Honors will be in Trondhjem Lutheran Cemetery, Lonsdale. Pallbearers will be Ronald Halverson, Kenneth Halverson, Ted Arneson, Clair Boyum, Jim Wiese, Andrew Heglund, Tom Peterson and Dan Fredrickson. Visitation will be at the church on Monday one hour prior to the funeral.

Memorials are preferred to the Trondhjem Community Preservation Society (TCPS).
