Ray Johnson, age 85 of Northfield, passed away Friday morning, April 14, 2017, at Three Links Care Center.

Raymond Roland Johnson was born September 17, 1931, in River Falls, Wisconsin, to Clarence and Frances (Kukuska) Johnson. He attended country school and at the age of 16 moved to Northfield to work with Culver Olson on his 420-acre farm near Dennison. While roller skating at the Northfield Armory, Ray met Geraldine Tille and the two dated for a few years until marrying on June 22, 1954, at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in Northfield. After marriage they rented a farm in the Sogn Valley for three years, lived in Dennison for a time, and then returned to Northfield.

Ray had different jobs throughout his life. He was a Northfield police officer, worked for College City Beverage, tended bar at both the Northfield Golf Club and the L&M Bar, worked at Water King, and drove school bus for more than 30 years. In the early 1970’s Ray and Gerry started their own business – Cannon Valley Water, where they worked together until they retired in 2013. He was a long-time member of St. Dominic’s, including volunteering as an usher and the Calvary Cemetery board. He was a 4th degree Knights of Columbus member. Ray supplied water for the Defeat of Jesse James Days parade annually. When the Quarterback Club began to offer breakfast, Ray prided himself on being their first customer. He had his favorite booth and that’s how he would begin his day. He and Gerry owned a camper and enjoyed regular trips throughout Minnesota to visit family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Geraldine; seven children: Barb (Lenny) Moore of Northfield, JoAnn (Larry) Edwardsen of Northfield, Kenny (Diana Underdahl) of Northfield, John (Pam Roberts) of Northfield, David (Colleen) of Sartell, Chaz of Farmington, Douglas (Sally) of Skofield, WI; 17 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; his brothers: Clarence Jr. (Marion) of Hampton; Don (Marion) of Northfield, Dick of Northfield, Gene of Coates, Larry (Karen) of Nelson, WI; his sisters: Karen Gudim of Apple Valley, Kathy Spartz and friend Bob Harrison of Northfield; his sister-in-law, Dorothy Johnson; his brother-in-law, Gale Truax of Hoyt Lakes; other family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his infant son, his brothers Jimmy and Gary, his sister Pauline Truax, and his parents.
