Marian Joy Reiland (nee Cliff) passed away with her family by her side on Friday evening, January 11, 2019, at Three Links Care Center in Northfield, Minnesota, at the age of 93.

Marian was born July 11, 1925, in Bear Valley, Chester Township, in Wabasha County, Minnesota, to Charles and Caroline (George) Cliff. She attended county school through eight grade and graduated from Mazeppa High School in 1943. The following year Marian studied in Winona, Minnesota, earning a teaching certificate from Winona Normal School. She returned to Mazeppa to teach in the area country schools.

In 1944, Marian married Arthur “Bud” Reiland. They would enjoy 61 years of marriage in Mazeppa, where they raised six children. While teaching and raising a family, Marian pursued a degree in education. Initially she attended night school in Rochester, then summer school in Winona, earning her bachelors’s degree in 1971. Marion loved learning and teaching others. When the country schools were consolidated, she taught in Zumbrota, then came back to Mazeppa when a grade teacher was needed. She saw her classroom go up in smoke in 1975, teaching in a church basement or fire hall until the new school was completed. Marian contributed her time and energy to school functions, committee work, and school paring. She retired in 1990.

Retirement allowed Marian to pursue hobbies and interests she was eager to develop. Her hobbies included: gardening, sewing, cross stitch, Twins baseball, Bridge Club, Women’s Improvement Club, cooking and baking for family and friends, travel to Alaska, Canada and Europe, the cabin up north, and much of the United States. She loved visits from family and friends, going to auctions and craft fairs, and most of all getting to know her 12 grandchildren. She loved their visits, celebrating their birthdays, the holidays, and their many accomplishments.

Marian is survived by six children, Dan (Carol) Reiland of Merrifield, Barbara Gentling of Northfield, Mary Jo (Bob) Miller of South St. Paul, Kate (Bob) Kuyper of Northfield, Jeff (Tracy) Reiland of Burnsville, Amy (Greg) McCallum of Redwood Falls; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, as well as friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; 2 brothers, Murray and Max; 3 sisters, Jean, Patty and Dorothy, and great-grandson, Jacob.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00PM, Monday, January 28, 2019, at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Mazeppa. Visitation will begin at Noon. A reception will follow. Interment for Bud & Marian will be in Saints Peter & Paul Cemetery in the Spring of 2019.

In lieu of flowers Memorials sent to Zumbrota Mazeppa Education Foundation.
