Harriet Lucille (Kline) Menard was born April 2, 1932 in Northfield, Minnesota, to Merritt and Dora “Maude” (Marriott) Kline, the youngest of 11 children. She was raised on the family dairy farm in Randolph, and had many fond memories of getting up in the early morning to milk the cows, then separate, bottle and deliver the milk to area neighbors all before her bus driver dad picked her up for school. Harriet graduated from Randolph High School in 1950. She worked for the Northfield Bell Telephone Company for two years then for an insurance company in Minneapolis.

While Harriet’s sister Nancy, and brother-in-law Tom were stationed in England, they became acquainted with Ken Grisim, a fellow soldier and Northfielder. Nancy suggested that he look up Harriet when he returned home. Ken followed her advice and the two were married on June 3rd, 1955. The couple settled on a farm in Waterford Township where they raised their four children. Harriet participated in 4-H with all of her kids while keeping busy on the family farm. They cherished their many trips to Montana for Kline family reunions.

Ken and Harriet divorced, but became friends later in life. Harriet married Ray Menard in 1975 and moved to Northfield. They later divorced and in 2003 Harriet moved to the Northfield Retirement Community.

Harriet was a charter member of Emmaus Baptist Church and later became a member of Little Prairie Methodist Church. She worked for the City of Northfield and retired after 30+ years. Her lifelong passion was music. At the age of 5 she would stand on a kitchen chair singing hymns with her entire family.

She was a member of the Faribault Chapter of Sweet Adelines and sang with her quartet, the Four-Get-Me-Nots. Harriet was proud to win the Novice Quartet Competition in 1976 where she was named “Sweet Adeline Leading Lady of The Year”. She also sang with The Bleacher Girls for over 15 years and loved performing at the Over and Back concerts. Over the years, she has sang many times in local churches and at weddings and funerals. With her infectious smile and willingness to laugh she was a joy to be around. She will be greatly missed.

Harriet passed away with her family by her side on Monday afternoon, January 20, 2020, at Three Links Care Center, at the age of 87.
