Gloria Knutson, age 87 of Plymouth, formerly of Northfield, passed away Sunday morning, October 27, 2019, at her home in Cornerstone Assisted Living.

Gloria Christie (Mortensen) Knutson was born on July 4, 1932, in Neenah, Wisconsin, to Gordon E. and Hannah (Rasmussen) Mortensen. She grew up in Neenah, graduating from Neenah High School in 1950. In 1954, she graduated from St. Olaf College with a degree in music education and history. While attending St. Olaf, Gloria met her future husband, Gerhard Knutson, and the two were married on August 14, 1954 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Neenah. While Gary attended Luther Seminary, Gloria served as secretary to the Dean of Students. Later she served as a tour guide at the Betty Crocker test kitchens, a job she thoroughly enjoyed, meeting other wonderful women who enjoyed cooking as much as she did. Gary’s career as an ELCA pastor took the couple to several congregations in several communities, including Thousand Oaks, California, Apple Valley and Crystal, MN, and River Falls, WI. Gloria served as a director for adult and children’s choirs along the way, as well as raising the couple’s three children. Gloria very much enjoyed being a pastor’s wife and appreciated the people of each congregation that the couple served. While in River Falls, Gary was elected bishop of the Northwest Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, a position he held for eight years. He then served as interim pastor in several congregations, including those in Oslo, Norway and Chicago.

Gloria loved to cook, spend time with family, and play piano. In retirement, Gloria and Gary enjoyed travelling, particularly the several trips they took to Norway. They had long dreamed of moving back to Northfield, and in 1995, they did. They enjoyed the company of the many classmates from their St. Olaf days who had also settled in the Northfield area.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Gerhard; her children, Lori of Eau Claire, WI, Steven (Nancy) of Plymouth, MN, Paul (Debbie) of Beldenville, WI;3 grandchildren, Kaleb Spieker,(special friend Lindsey Radle), Kristine Spieker Dixon (Nathan), and Jon Knutson; 3 step-grandchildren, Melissa, Jessica & Joseph Taylor; and 2 great-granddaughters, Kaydence Larkins Spieker & Kiya Spieker; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her brother Gordon Mortensen and her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM, on Friday, November 15, 2019, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 500 W. 3rd St., Northfield. Visitation will begin at 1:00PM, and a reception will follow. Interment will be in the St. John’s Columbarium.
