Gerald Swanson, age 85 of rural Farmington, passed away at home on Saturday evening, October 26, 2019. Gerald George Swanson was born December 25, 1933, in Washburn, Wisconsin, to Herbert and Clara (Smith) Swanson, and was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church (now Messiah Lutheran). He graduated from Washburn High School in 1951 and joined the U.S. Navy, serving in Korea from 1951 to 1954. Gerald Swanson, age 85 of rural Farmington, passed away at home on Saturday evening, October 26, 2019.

Gerald George Swanson was born December 25, 1933, in Washburn, Wisconsin, to Herbert and Clara (Smith) Swanson, and was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church (now Messiah Lutheran). He graduated from Washburn High School in 1951 and joined the U.S. Navy, serving in Korea from 1951 to 1954. Following his discharge, he moved to Minneapolis and attended Dunwoody Institute to become a machinist. In 1965, Gerald went to work for Metro Machine and Engineering – retiring in 1998. Gerald married Beverly Sorenson on October 11, 1969, at Highview Christiania Lutheran Church . In 1976, they moved into their home in Farmington. In his spare time, he enjoyed camping, driving and riding horses, and meeting with his Yellow Ribbon group at the senior center in Lakeville.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Beverly; daughter Julie Beth Roberts of Bloomington; grandchildren Luke and Leila; his brother Tom (Beverly) of Montana; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law Joe Roberts, his brother Jim and his parents.

A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held at 11:30AM, Friday, November 1, 2019, at Highview Christiania Lutheran Church, 26690 Highview Ave, rural Farmington. Visitation will begin at 10AM. Interment with Military Honors will be in Highview Cemetery.

    I’m so sorry for your loss, Bev & Julie. I think of Gerry as a soft spoken gentle giant and I always brightened a bit when i saw him knowing he was always ready to say hello. I’m sorry that we’ll miss the celebration of his life as we have a family funeral that same day. My prayers go out to you, Luke & Leila.
