Elna Mildred Halverson Hansen went to her eternal home on February 13, 2014. She was born August 5, 1925 in rural Lonsdale, Minnesota. Her parents were Eddie and Helen (Fossum) Halverson. She was baptized by the Rev. B. L. Sundahl on September 13, 1925, at Trondhjem Lutheran Church. Her sponsors were her grandparents, John & Gina (Docken) Fossum and her Uncle & Aunt, Louis & Olla (Halverson) Fossum
Elna attended a one room country grade school and graduated from Northfield High School in 1943. While attending high school she stayed with her grandparents in Webster and worked at the Webster Cooperative Dairy Assn. as a bookkeeper for her grandfather, John Fossum who was the creamery manager. This was the start of Elna’s lifelong work as a businesswoman.
On June 12, 1947, Elna married Sherwin Harold Hansen, son of the Rev. Torbjorn and Hansena Hansen. Torbjorn was the pastor at Solor Lutheran Church in Webster and that is where the wedding was held. They lived in Northfield while Sherwin was a student at St. Olaf College and Elna worked at the Northfield Milk Products Co. Since Sherwin had three years of college remaining when they were married Elna like to say she earned her PHT (Put Hubby Through) while Sherwin earned his BA. In 1954 they moved to Minneapolis and Elna began working at the Richfield Bank & Trust Co. where she was employed for 37 years. She took classes through the American Institute of Banking and obtained her Banking Certificate. Elna was involved with Professional Secretaries International and served as Treasurer and was also on the Board of Directors. She served on the Board of Governors for the American Institute of Banking.
Elna served as organist at the Trondhjem Lutheran Church for many years beginning when she was still in high school. She also taught Sunday School and served as treasurer of the congregation. She was active in the Trondhjem Community Preservation Society and served on the Board for 18 years.
In 1992, Elna and Sherwin joined Woodlake Lutheran Church in Richfield where they were active in the Senior Fellowship Group. They also enjoyed the Wednesday morning Matins, followed by coffee and fellowship and an educational program.
In 2012, Elna and Sherwin moved from their home in Bloomington where they had lived for more than 50 years to Kildahl Park Point in Northfield. They joined St. John’s Lutheran Church when they moved to Northfield.
Of utmost importance in Elna’s life were her strong Christian faith, her devotion to her beloved family and her cherished friends. Elna loved to entertain and hosted many family gatherings for Easter and Thanksgiving. She set a beautiful table using her lovely Fostoria dishes!
