Ruby Meierbachtol, age 96, passed away December 5, 2019 at the Evergreen Lodge of the Northfield Retirement Community.

Ruby Winifred was born June 15, 1923 to Reuben and Irma (Sommer) Luhmann in Meriden, MN. The family relocated to Webster, MN when Ruby was a child, and then to Elysian, MN where she graduated as salutatorian from Waterville High School in 1941. After graduation, she worked at the bank in Elysian, and on Sept. 6, 1945, upon his discharge from the U.S. Army, she married Charles Meierbachtol. They lived in Faribault, MN for many years where Ruby worked as a school secretary. Following Charles’ career, they relocated to Aberdeen, SD and Roseville, MN where Ruby continued to work as a school secretary. In 1998, Charlie and Ruby moved to Parkview West on the Northfield Retirement Community campus. After Charlie’s death in 2001, Ruby continued to live at Parkview until her move to Evergreen Lodge in April of 2015.

Ruby had a beautiful singing voice, loved word find puzzles, Wrigley’s chewing gum, knitting, summer vacations on Baby Lake, playing Rummikub and card games, watching Twins baseball games, and eating anything chocolate! She made a delicious pineapple upside down cake, and a mean frosted sour cream cookie. Ruby made friends easily, and was a good friend to all who knew her. She was a thoughtful, gentle, and faithful Christian woman in every sense of the word.

Ruby’s memory failed her during her last few years, but she was very well cared for at Evergreen Lodge, and was always very content. She really enjoyed having Steve, Abbie, and their family visit. Ruby always told Steve as he was leaving, “You’re so good to me.”
Ruby is survived by her children: Steve (Abbie) of Northfield; Kay (Tolling) Jennings of Vancouver, BC; grandsons Adam (Mary) of Mound, MN, and Collin (Krista) of Los Alamos, NM; five great grandchildren, Miles, Hannah, Lucy, Will, and Charlotte; nieces and nephews; other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; her brother, Howard Luhmann; her nephew, Mark Luhmann; and her parents.
Special thanks to the staff at Parkview West and Evergreen Lodge for surrounding Ruby with tender and loving care.

A celebration of Ruby’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at the Chapel of the Northfield Retirement Community. Visitation will be one hour prior. A reception lunch will follow. Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Northfield Retirement Center Foundation or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Arrangements are with Benson & Langehough Funeral Home.
