Ronald M. Petersen, age 81, of Northfield, passed away Monday, January 8, 2018, at Northfield Retirement Community. Ron was born August 5, 1936, in Hazelwood (Webster Township), Dakota County, Minnesota, to Maurice and Evelyn (Holt) Petersen. He was baptized and confirmed at the East Christiania Lutheran Church, attended country school in Hazelwood and graduated from Northfield High School in 1954. Ronald M. Petersen, age 81, of Northfield, passed away Monday, January 8, 2018, at Northfield Retirement Community. Ron was born August 5, 1936, in Hazelwood (Webster Township), Dakota County, Minnesota, to Maurice and Evelyn (Holt) Petersen. He was baptized and confirmed at the East Christiania Lutheran Church, attended country school in Hazelwood and graduated from Northfield High School in 1954. He served in the Air Force as an airplane mechanic from 1955 until 1963. Ron married Ilene Harstad on November 23, 1970, in Brookings, South Dakota. After marriage, they made their home near Castle Rock.
Ron had a variety of jobs over the years including milk hauler, silo builder, and truck driver. He retired in 2000 after 38 years with George F. Cook Construction.
Ron was a lifelong member of Christiania Lutheran Church, a member of the American Legion, and active at the Faribault Senior Center. He enjoyed woodworking, doing gardening and yard work, bird watching, reading Westerns, and anything to do with Cowboys. He could often be spotted with a toothpick in his mouth!
Survivors include his children: Vickey (Mike) Goeden of Underwood, Debbey (Kurt) Johnson of Kensington, Lonny Kilde of Detroit Lakes, Kristie (Wes) Anderson of Northfield, Jamie (Laura) Petersen of Rosemount, Melanie (Alan) Reinardy of Hastings; 34 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 6 sisters: Gladys Bolton of Northfield, Donna (Roman) Kalina of Lonsdale, Juanita Wente of Dresser, WI, Beverly (Richard) Allenof North Mankato, Maureen (Richard) Zibrowski of Caledonia, Sharon (Ronald) Langenfeld of Hastings; 3 brothers: Marlin (Madalyn) Petersen of Northfield, Walter (Bonnie) Petersen of Cannon Falls, Kenneth (JoAnn) Petersen of Northfield; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Ilene, his parents, his sisters LaVonne (in infancy), Audrey Malecha, and Delores Bastyr and his brothers-in-law.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 12, 2018, at 11 AM at Christiania Lutheran Church in rural Lakeville. Interment with military honors will be in East Christiania Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, January 11, 2018, from 4 PM to 7 PM at Benson & Langehough Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service in the church.
