Richard Elstad, age 87 of Northfield, passed away Wednesday morning, January 16, 2019, at Three Links Care Center. Richard Leslie Elstad was born June 22, 1931, on the family farm in Greenvale Township, Dakota County, Minnesota, to Reuben O. and Lizzie M. (Larson) Elstad. Richard Elstad, age 87 of Northfield, passed away Wednesday morning, January 16, 2019, at Three Links Care Center.

Richard Leslie Elstad was born June 22, 1931, on the family farm in Greenvale Township, Dakota County, Minnesota, to Reuben O. and Lizzie M. (Larson) Elstad. He was baptized on August 9, 1931, at Highview Christiania Lutheran Church and confirmed on July 14, 1945, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Farmington. He attended country school and Concordia High School in St. Paul. Following high school Richard attended the University of Minnesota Agriculture School in St. Paul. On November 9, 1951, Richard married Florence E. Wicklund in Mason City, Iowa. After marriage they made their home in White Bear Lake and Richard worked at the Arsenal in New Brighton. In 1952, he began working at the Ford Manufacturing plant in St. Paul. In 1953, they moved to Waterford and in 1963 to Castle Rock. Along with working for Ford, Richard operated his in-laws farm for many years. He retired from Ford in 1985 and began a new career as an electrician – owning and operating Castle Refrigeration. Richard and Florence remained in Castle Rock until moving to the Northfield Hospital Long Term Care Center in March 2017. In April 2018, Richard transferred to Three Links Care Center.

Richard enjoyed fishing, going to the cabin at Lake of the Woods and spending time with his family. He was kind, grateful, meticulous and organized, helpful, and generous to others. He was a man that enjoyed his life and careers, and “Lived to Work!”

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Florence; 2 daughters, Connie (Jim) Cihak of Lonsdale, Lori Elstad (fiancee Dave Drentlaw) of Northfield; 5 grandchildren, Jeremiah (Vicky) Cihak, Jason Cihak, JoyLee (Adam) Royle, Elissa Dulski (Alex Frandel), Josh Dulski; 7 great grandchildren, Caleb, Jacob, Payton, Davis, Allen, Henry, Heather; one sister, Glenda (Don) Holz of Farmington; 4 sisters-in-law, Judy Heintz of Apple Valley, Helene Heintz of Farmington, Joan Wicklund of New Brighton, Shirley Bosshart of Northfield; 2 brothers-in-law, Carl (Betty) Wicklund of Farmington, Jerry (Audrey) Wicklund of Northfield; 3 step-siblings, Diane (Randy) Borchardt, Dale (Lynn) Heintz, Mark (Lorena) Heintz; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by their son, Larry; his parents; his step-father, Alfred Heintz; his sister, Lorraine Anderson; and his brothers Marbert and Glen Heintz.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM, Monday, January 21, 2019, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Northfield. Visitation will begin at 1:00PM, and a reception will follow. Interment will take place in Oaklawn Cemetery at a later date. Honorary pallbearers are grandchildren Jeremiah Cihak, Jason Cihak, JoyLee Royle, Elissa Dulski and Josh Dulski.

Memorials are preferred to Pathways at Three Links Care Center.
