Lorraine Grossman, age 87 of Northfield, passed away at the Northfield Hospital on Monday evening, June 11, 2018, with her husband and family by her side. Lorraine Emily Grossman was born December 10, 1930, on the family farm at Union Lake, in Bridgewater Township, Rice County, Minnesota, to William and Otilia (Dvorak) Barta. Lorraine Grossman, age 87 of Northfield, passed away at the Northfield Hospital on Monday evening, June 11, 2018, with her husband and family by her side.

Lorraine Emily Grossman was born December 10, 1930, on the family farm at Union Lake, in Bridgewater Township, Rice County, Minnesota, to William and Otilia (Dvorak) Barta. She was baptized at Immaculate Conception in Lonsdale and confirmed at Annunciation Catholic Church in Hazelwood. She attended District 56 Country School until 8th grade and graduated from Northfield High School in 1948. Lorraine worked at Northfield Hospital until her mother suffered a stroke, when she began working at Marshall’s Clothing Store in Northfield. On August 2, 1952, Lorraine married Peter G. Grossman at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church and they lived in Northfield until moving to New Prague. After two years they returned to Northfield and Lorraine began cleaning houses. She worked at Snyder’s Drugstore and as a “lunch lady” with the Northfield Public Schools for 17 years, mostly at St. Dominic School and Sibley Elementary.

Lorraine was a longtime active member of the Church of St. Dominic and a member of Rosary Society. She always had a big garden and loved her flower beds. She always attended her kids’ and grandkids’ and great-grandkids’ events. Lorraine was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and volunteered with the Red Cross for many years. She enjoyed playing cards, baking, walking and dearly loved her family, grandkids and great-grandkids.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Peter; her children, Michael (Sally), Jon, Anthony (Jackie), Jeanne Gulan, all of Northfield, Susan (Bruce) McDougal of Fairfield, Maine, and Nancy (Phil) Kamp of Tuscan, Arizona; grandchildren: Peter, Mikayla, Anthony “TJ” (Kate), Melissa (Scott Musgjerd), Nick (Shannon), Drew (Shanna), Charles (Basak), Matt (fiancee Katie Kuyper), and Sam; great-grandchildren: Maria (fiancé Chris Ancel), Tayler, Josie, Anthony “Tripp”, Lucas, Daniel, Jacob, Keller, Elizabeth Lorraine “Ellie”, Gavin, Ian and Liam; other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her son Gregory, her grandson Andrew McDougal, her twin brother Leonard Barta, her brother Bill Barta, her sister Bessie Tuma and her parents.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00AM, Saturday, June 16, 2018, at the Church of St. Dominic in Northfield. Pallbearers will be Peter Grossman, Mikayla Grossman, TJ Grossman, Melissa Musgjerd, Nick Gulan, Drew Gulan, Matt Jaeckels and Sam Jaeckels. Honorary pallbearers are her great-grandchildren. Interment will take place at 2:15PM, Sunday, June 17, 2018, at Calvary Cemetery, Northfield. Visitation will be 4-7PM, Friday, June 15, 2018, at the Benson & Langehough Funeral Home in Northfield. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday one hour prior to the service.

Memorials are preferred to Northfield Hospital or St. Dominic’s School.

    I am so sorry for your loss. Lorraine was a very beautiful woman inside and out. I remember our family get togethers at my grandparents (Bessie and Jerry) and I so enjoyed visiting with her. Hugs and prayers to all of you.
