Kris Vohs, age 72 of Northfield, passed away peacefully at home, on Wednesday morning, May 30, 2018, surrounded by his family, after a battle with brain cancer. Kris Lee Vohs was born July 21, 1945, in Faribault, Minnesota, to Harry and Mildred (Sandager) Vohs. He graduated from Faribault High School in 1963 then Mankato Vocational School. Kris Vohs, age 72 of Northfield, passed away peacefully at home, on Wednesday morning, May 30, 2018, surrounded by his family, after a battle with brain cancer.

Kris Lee Vohs was born July 21, 1945, in Faribault, Minnesota, to Harry and Mildred (Sandager) Vohs. He graduated from Faribault High School in 1963 then Mankato Vocational School. He married Caryl (Heltne) Swenson on November 23, 1974. Kris worked for St. Olaf College as a carpenter for 28 years, retiring in 2005. He and Caryl were faithful and active members of Bethel Lutheran Church, where Kris often volunteered his carpentry and fix-it skills to repair or construct needed items. He was a talented craftsman who designed and built his home.

Kris was always civic minded and a public servant in the true sense of the word, serving on Northfield City Council for 11 years, the Rice County Housing and Redevelopment Authority for 21 years, the Northfield Housing and Redevelopment Authority for 20 years, Community Land Trust, the League of Minnesota Cities Nominating Committee, the Environmental Quality Commission, and the Drug Task Force. He also volunteered for many years with Rice County Habitat for Humanity, including serving on the board for 10 years. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, traveling, and woodworking. He was a member of the Sundowners Car Club and loved to drive his classic ‘32 Ford. Kris’ true passion was his family. He was always there for them and all the activities they were involved in. He was hard working, a man of honesty and integrity, and one who was always willing to help those in need. He will be deeply missed.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Caryl; 3 children and their spouses, Eric (Bonnie) Swenson of Encinitas, California, Chris (Stacy) Swenson of Bloomington, and Rachel Vohs Nead (Eric Nead) of Minneapolis; 2 grandchildren, Hailey and Noah; 2 step-grandchildren, Brendan and Ailbe; 3 step-great-grandchildren, Ellie, Lauryn and Kylie; 2 brothers, Karl (Ann) Vohs of Faribault, Kim (Lauren) Vohs of Plymouth; his sister Kolette Stoeckel (Jack Greer) of Minneapolis; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Kay Burmeister.

A celebration of Kris’ life will be held at 2:00PM, Sunday, June 3, 2018, at Bethel Lutheran Church, Northfield. Visitation will be 4:00 – 7:00PM, Saturday, June 2, 2018, at Bethel Lutheran Church and will continue on Sunday one hour prior to the service.

Memorials are preferred to Habitat for Humanity, Bethel Lutheran Church, or Hope Lodge in Minneapolis.

    Caryl and family—my sincerest sympathy to all. U were good friends and neighbors. I remember kids coming to your house after school for me to pick up! Good memories of all Vohs family members. Prayers to all. He and John are busy catching up!
