Kathleen Cashill Petschel Flynn, age 98 of Northfield, passed away on Friday, July 20, 2018, at Three Links Care Center, surrounded by her family. She was born in St. Paul, MN on April 2, 1920, to John and Marion (McDonough) Cashill. One hundred percent Irish, she always had a twinkle in her eye, and quickly made friends wherever she lived or worked. She attended Catholic grade schools in St. Paul, and graduated from the Villa Maria Academy in Frontenac, MN. She also attended Washington High School (St. Paul) where she met her first husband, Howard Petschel.

Howard and Kathleen married in Salt Lake City, UT, where Howard was training as a World War II Army Air Corps pilot. He was killed in 1942 when his B-24 plane was shot down off the coast of Broome, Australia. Widowed and pregnant, Kathleen returned to St. Paul, where she gave birth to her son, Howard, and went to work at the downtown St. Paul Post Office. Over the course of a 30-year career, she rose from mail room clerk to Director of Procurement and Supply. Always dressed to the nines, she loved shopping at Frank Murphy’s and Dayton’s Oval Room.

In 1954, Kathleen married St. Paul Architect Eugene Flynn. Together they had one child, Melissa.

Kathleen retired from the Post Office in 1972, and threw herself into a variety of interests. She doted on her family, which now included three granddaughters, and was an active golfer and bowler, winning many awards. Adept at sewing and knitting, she had a keen eye for color and style. Relatives and friends often sought her advice when they needed to find “just the right outfit.”

Kathleen enjoyed many travels in retirement with Gene. They traveled widely to Mexico, Canada, and Europe. Gene passed away in 1992, and Kathleen moved to Northfield in 2007, to be closer to Melissa’s family.

Kathleen lived at Millstream Commons for 11 years. She easily made friends with residents and staff, and participated in fishing trips, bingo, road trips, and visiting the gift shop. Kathleen was known for her love of jewelry and for wearing multiple necklaces and bracelets at the same time. In later years, her walker was a conversation piece, with holiday decorations and bling.

Kathleen is survived by her son, Howard Petschel, Jr., of Sandpoint, ID; her daughter Melissa and son-in-law Paul Hager; granddaughters Rachel (Steve) Goniwiecha, Erin Petschel, and Alicia (Jay) Jacobs; grandsons Christopher, Nicholas, and Samuel Hager; and six great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, August 11, at 10 a.m. at the Church of St. Dominic in Northfield. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Mendota Heights.

Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Millstream Commons and Three Links Care Center for their care and concern for Kathleen. Memorials preferred to Millstream Commons/Three Links Care Center.
