Joseph B. Nesheim joined his Lord and Savior in Heaven on May 17, 2018, after an 83-year lifetime of love, adventure, and service to God. Surrounded by family, he drew his final breath in Northfield, Minn., where he lived in retirement with his wife, Carole.

Joseph Bergwitz Nesheim was born Sept. 10, 1934, in La Crosse, Wis., to the Rev. O.J. and Vera Nesheim. He was baptized by his father at Bad Axe Lutheran Church, with the entire congregation standing up as the newborn’s sponsors. He grew up in a loving home outside Viroqua with his six siblings, attended rural Tewalt School and loved working for his neighbor, Alfred Halverson at Halverson’s farm and Halverson’s Store.

Joe graduated from Viroqua High School, Luther College, and Luther Seminary and was ordained as a Lutheran minister on July 16, 1961. In his final years at the seminary, he met and married Carole Schlunsen.

Joe served as pastor at parishes in Richfield and West Liberty, Iowa, Independence, Mo., Deerfield, Wis., Osage, Iowa, and Clermont, Iowa. After retirement, he and Carole spent many winters in South Texas.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, reading, gardening, auto mechanics, morning and afternoon coffee, and driving around the country in a motorhome.

He is survived by his wife Carole; children Kirsten (Jim) Peterson, Eric (Mirtha) Nesheim, and Sonja (Michael) Dapper; grandchildren Hannah (Sam) Peterson Green, Nehemiah Nesheim, Matt Peterson, Grace Dapper, Gabriela Nesheim, and Julia Dapper; sisters Joan Gillespie and Jean Swiggum; brother David (Tami) Nesheim, brother-in-law Robert Esse and sister-in-law Donna Nesheim; nieces, nephews, and numerous dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. O.J. and Vera Nesheim; sisters Margaret Nesheim and Mary Esse; and brother Obed Nesheim.

A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield on Thursday, May 24, at 2 p.m. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials to St. John’s Lutheran Church are preferred. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say Rejoice.

    I would love to attend Joes memorial service but I just drive around town. Not too far! But I will always remember Joe as soft spoken man good advice & lived his life for the Lord May God give you peace & comfort at this time Carole & Family prayers.
