Helen Evelyn Doak Larson, age 90, “graduated to glory” Sunday morning, June 25, 2017, at Evergreen Lodge at the Northfield Retirement Community. Helen was born April 19, 1927 to Alexander and Edith (Neff) Doak in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She accepted Christ into her heart at the age of 16, a decision that would define her life. After graduating from Rufus King High School in Milwaukee, she attended Northwestern College in Minneapolis where she received a Certificate in Biblical Studies. While working as a soda jerk at Bridgeman’s Ice Cream Parlor, Helen met bus boy and fellow Northwestern College student Ronald L. Larson. They married on June 10, 1950 and moved to Southern California, where Ron studied at Fuller Theological Seminary and they were blessed with four wonderful children. Helen served as a pastor’s wife alongside Ron at churches in Quartz Hill and La Crescenta, California for 30 years. Together, they were avid Dodger fans, competitive board game opponents, enjoyed camping and adored their family. She worked as a skilled keypunch operator, a tax verifier, directed children’s choirs and was president of Women’s Missionary Society. In 2005, Helen and Ron moved to Northfield, where Helen continued to care for Ron in loving dedication until his passing in 2009, after 59 years of marriage. A doting mother and grandmother, her warmth, genuine care for others, and love of adventure, humor, and family were immutable. Helen has gone home to be with the Lord, joining her husband Ron, and her brother Alex Doak, who proceeded her in death.

Helen is survived by her children, Glenn (Jane) Larson, Starr (Dan) Kahl, Scott (Diane) Larson, Dawn (Alan) McCool, 13 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

My husband and I are truly sorry for your tremendous loss and would like to express our condolences to the entire family. We cannot imagine the great pain and sorrow you are experiencing during this very difficult time. It is our sincere hope you find comfort in knowing that God has promised to “swallow up death forever” (Isaiah 25:8), and that he will resurrect our dear loved ones who have passed away. (John 5:28). May your many great memories help you find peace and comfort as you go through the coming days.
