Gilmore K. Granat, age 88 of Northfield, passed away Sunday afternoon, May 19, 2019, at the Care Center of the Northfield Retirement Community. Gilmore K. Granat, age 88 of Northfield, passed away Sunday afternoon, May 19, 2019, at the Care Center of the Northfield Retirement Community.

Gilmore was born February 24, 1931, in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Harold and Ruth (Christensen) Granat. He graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Pharmacy in 1955. Gil served in the US Army from July 1956 to July 1958 as a Detachment Commander in charge of the dispensary at Fort Bragg, NC.

Gil married Elaine Johnson on December 26, 1956 at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Withrow, Minnesota. They lived in North Carolina for two years, before returning to St. Paul. In 1965, they moved to Red Wing where Gil worked as a pharmacist. In 1969, they moved to Northfield where Gil served as a pharmacist at the Northfield Erickson’s store (now Family Fare) for 27 years. He retired in 1996.

Over the years he was active in many civic clubs and organizations, including the Northfield Lions Club. He was also involved in the BeFriender Ministry at Bethel Lutheran Church, where the couple were long-time members. In 1996 Gil was presented the Hometown Spirit Award which exemplified his love of Northfield. Gil will be fondly remembered by family and friends as a loving father and grandfather, with a quick wit and a passion for making everyone around him feel special.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Elaine; his daughter, Katherine Granat (Paul Morrissey) of North Reading, MA; his sons, Mark (Mary) of Apple Valley, John (Shelly) of Forest Lake; five grandchildren: Molly, Kate, Matt, Kyle and Christopher; his brother, Peter (Jeanne) of Lakeland; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of Gil’s life will be held at 11:00AM, Thursday, May 30, 2019, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Northfield. Visitation will begin at 10:00AM, and a reception will follow. Interment will be in Withrow Cemetery, Withrow, Minnesota at a later date.

Memorials are preferred to Bethel Lutheran Church.

    I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Gilmore. He was an an amazing man and touched so many with his love for life! Many wonderful memories!! He will be missed! Prayers to Elaine and family during this time of healing.💕

    I was just talking about Gil to a customer at great clips and they told me he had passed. He was my favorite customer I will miss him. He was so kind and caring. Sorry for your loss he will be missed! Love Dena Jensen Eggum
