Fern Lord, age 93 of Northfield, passed away Sunday morning, December 2, 2018, at Evergreen Lodge at the Northfield Retirement Community. Fern Grace Lord was born on June 18, 1925, on the family farm in Empire Township, Dakota County, Minnesota, to Fred and Grace (Manke) Juenke. She was baptized and confirmed at Evangelical United Brethren Church in rural Farmington. Fern Lord, age 93 of Northfield, passed away Sunday morning, December 2, 2018, at Evergreen Lodge at the Northfield Retirement Community.

Fern Grace Lord was born on June 18, 1925, on the family farm in Empire Township, Dakota County, Minnesota, to Fred and Grace (Manke) Juenke. She was baptized and confirmed at Evangelical United Brethren Church in rural Farmington. She attended District 55 country school, graduated from Farmington High School in 1943, and attended Miss Wood’s Kindergarten-Primary Training School (now Macalester College). She married Clair Phillips in 1946; they later divorced. Fern taught for one year in Columbia Heights and for three years in South St. Paul. In 1949, she moved to California, where she married George W. Lord, Jr. After marriage, they lived in various parts of the U.S. as George served in the U.S. Marines. In 1962, the family moved to Northfield and Fern taught at Longfellow School for five years and at Sibley Elementary for ten years. She retired in 1974 and worked as a housekeeper and companion for Mrs. Farrington, then as a janitor for Northfield Schools. In 1999, she began working at St. Olaf College and remained there until fully retiring.

Fern was a longtime member of Farmington United Methodist Church and belonged to the Northfield Business Women’s Club. She enjoyed needlework, crossword puzzles, Bingo and TV game shows.

Survivors include her children, George Lord of Utah, Pam Almen of Dundas; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her sons Del Phillips and James Lord, her daughter Penny Yahnke, her brother Louis Juenke, and her sister Pearl in infancy.

Services will be 1:00PM, Saturday, December 8, 2018, at Benson & Langehough Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place in Emmanuel Cemetery, Farmington, in the Spring. Honorary pallbearers are her great-grandchildren, KrisLynn, Cameron, Collin, Kayla, Ashley, Christian, Lily, Daniel, Aiden, Michael, Liam, Robert and Arnold.
