Dorothy Tupy, age 94 of Northfield, passed away Saturday evening, July 22, 2017, at Three Links Care Center. Dorothy Elizabeth Choukalas Tupy was born April 23, 1923, in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Nicholas and Mary “Mayme” (Reil) Choukalas. She was raised on Minnehaha Avenue in St. Paul and graduated from Harding High School in 1942. She attended Rasmussen Business College and following her education worked for Minnesota Mutual Insurance Company and later Neuman’s Department Store. Dorothy Tupy, age 94 of Northfield, passed away Saturday evening, July 22, 2017, at Three Links Care Center.

Dorothy Elizabeth Choukalas Tupy was born April 23, 1923, in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Nicholas and Mary “Mayme” (Reil) Choukalas. She was raised on Minnehaha Avenue in St. Paul and graduated from Harding High School in 1942. She attended Rasmussen Business College and following her education worked for Minnesota Mutual Insurance Company and later Neuman’s Department Store. While attending a dance at the Prom Ballroom, Dorothy met her future husband Henry William Tupy. Dorothy and Henry married on May 18, 1950, in St. Paul. After marriage they made their home on the Tupy family homestead in Webster Township. Dorothy was at home on the farm with the children until going to work at Sheldahl. In 1974, Dorothy and Henry sold the farm and moved to Northfield. In 1975, she began working in food service for the Northfield school district and remained there 14 years – retiring in 1989. In retirement Dorothy worked several years at Hardee’s and McDonald’s, fully retiring at the age of 83.

Dorothy was a longtime active member of Castle Rock United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for over 20 years . For many years she was active with the Webster Mother’s Club and with Birthday Club. Dorothy was a great friend and mentor to many. She dedicated her life to listening to and caring for those who needed her, and her social and caring nature had a profound affect on the lives of many.

Survivors include her daughter, Margaret (Mark) Detlie of Northfield; her sons, David (Judy) Tupy of New Market, Paul (Joan) Tupy of Northfield; her son-in-law, Mark Kooiker of Minneapolis; her grandchildren, Michael (Beth) Tupy, Jill (Tyler) Morin, Sara (Tom) Holzer, Anne (Joe) Mundell, Eric Tupy (Jenna Stobbe), Mackenzie (Meredith) Kooiker, Kristopher Kooiker; great-grandchildren, Lauren, Ryan, Kate, Lola, Audrey, Ethan, Ezme and Beatrice; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Henry, her daughter JoAnne Kooiker, her sister Donna Peelgren and her brother John Choukalas.

Funeral services will be 10:30AM, Wednesday, July 26, 2017, Castle Rock United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. Visitation will be 4-7PM, Tuesday, July 25, 2017, at Benson & Langehough Funeral Home in Northfield and will continue at the church on Wednesday one hour prior to the funeral.
