Born January 14, 1925, Dorothy Severson Jarvey, very nearly aged 94, was promoted to Glory on Christmas Day, December 25, 2018.  Dorothy was a lovely, gracious woman who lived a full life and was thoroughly loved by her family.

Dorothy was the first child born to parents, Clara and Alfred Severson on their farm in Nerstrand, Minnesota.  Dorothy learned to enjoy hard work in her home at a young age.  Clara passed away, leaving Dorothy with an important role, helping to care for her family’s well-being, alongside her eventual stepmother, Gladys.  Dorothy treasured her siblings: Hazel (Oscar) Costello, Al (Doris) Severson, Jeanette (Cliff) Matson, Paul (Bitsy) Severson, and Dale (Sonja) Severson.  Her family’s life centered upon the Lord and the Valley Grove Church, a Norwegian immigrant church which sits in the beautiful farm valley of Nerstrand.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her adoring husband of 67 years, William Jarvey.  Dorothy and Bill married and began their life together in Minneapolis, having five children:  Ann (Rick) Garland, Carol (Chris) Schultz, Bill (Michelle) Jarvey, John (Mary) Jarvey, and Marilyn (William) Wagner.  Dorothy was selfless, always putting her family first.  She ran her happy home well, and everyone enjoyed her fresh baked bread and cookies and gathered for fabulous family meals.  Each was richly blessed to have such a great lady to call “Mom.”

Dorothy received training at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing in the Cadet Nurse program during World War II. She was awarded by the School of Nursing with a prestigious award for achieving a high degree of efficiency:  this is not surprising to anyone who knew her!  In December of 1945, Dorothy became a registered nurse and began a career which touched countless lives.  Dorothy was compassionate and highly capable.  As the Director of Nursing for Chapel View in Hopkins, Minnesota, she opened a brand new 120 bed facility.  Later, she served as the Director of Nursing for Careview Home, also in the Minneapolis area. Finally, she held several leadership positions for the Minnesota Department of Health where she reviewed and ensured quality care for long term care patients.

Dorothy and Bill retired to family property in the Minnesota north country on Long Lake in Eveleth, Minnesota.  There, she made a welcoming home where the family gathered, played, and laughed much. She loved her twelve grandchildren and her four great-grandchildren:  James (daughters Grace and Lilly) Garland, John (fiancé Taryn) Garland, Jason Garland, Edmond (fiancé Katie) Hawkins, Jonathan (Ashley and children Ellis and Jonathan) Hawkins, Erika (fiancé Jack) Jarvey, Brian Jarvey, Matthew Jarvey, Michael Jarvey, Andrew (fiancé Katie) Jarvey, Nicole Wagner, and Luke (Stephanie) Wagner.

Dorothy was a loyal friend, a gracious hostess, and a wonderful wife and mother.  She was grateful, respectful, patient, full of wisdom, and kind.  She brightened the world with her smile.

Dorothy’s friends and family will gather to honor Dorothy, giving thanks to God for her life, on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Messiah United Methodist Church, Plymouth, Minnesota.  Visitation: 10:00.  Memorial Service: 11:00.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts in memory of Dorothy be given to the Valley Grove Preservation Society, Box 75, Nerstrand, MN 55053 or to Messiah United Methodist Church, 17805 County Road 6.  Plymouth, MN 55447.
