Corrine Heiberg, age 83 of Northfield, passed away Saturday, September 9, 2017, at care center of the Northfield Retirement Community.

Corrine Ila (Wellendorf) Heiberg was born February 3, 1934, in Ellsworth, Minnesota, to Florence (Hall) Wellendorf and Earl Gertz Wellendorf. She grew up on the family farm in Rock County in southwestern Minnesota, where she participated in 4-H activities, attended the Ellsworth public schools and graduated as valedictorian of the Class of 1952.

For two years, Corrine attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, then transferred to the University of Minnesota where she studied home economics education, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1956. In Belle Plaine, she taught home economics to junior and senior high school students, as well as adult education evening classes.

Corrine married Elvin Heiberg of Northfield at the First Presbyterian Church in Luverne on August 3, 1957, shortly after Elvin graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. Their first homes were in San Antonio, Texas, while Elvin was assigned to the U.S. Army Medical Service School at Fort Sam Houston. Elvin then received assignment to the U.S. Army dental clinic at Schwaebisch Hall, Germany, where they lived for the next three years. The Heibergs’ sons Mark and Keith were born at the U.S. Army hospital in Bad Cannstatt, Germany. Son Kevin was born in Northfield in 1964.

After returning to Northfield in 1960, Elvin joined his father Fredrick’s dental practice. Fredrick retired in 1966, and Elvin continued to practice for a total of 37 years. For 15 years, Corrine also worked in his dental office.

Corrine was active in many volunteer organizations, including the American Red Cross, where she frequently managed bloodmobile canteens. At the Northfield Historical Society, she served on the board and arranged many displays in the museum. She was proud to be a founder of HATPIN (Households’ Alert to Pollution in Northfield) which established an early recycling program in 1969 and developed a Lands for Learning program in cooperation with the public schools. Corrine served on the board of the River Bend Nature Center in Faribault and the Environmental Quality Commission in Northfield. She was excited to lead Northfield school students on discovery excursions in the Sibley Marsh and Prairie, and served as an adult lead for Cub Scouts for ten years.

Three years of living in Europe developed Corrine’s interest in travel, culminating in 34 trips to Europe with Elvin. Often these trips involved courses with the University of Minnesota Alumni Campus Abroad. Remaining current in their professions, Corrine and Elvin attended many state and national meetings of home economics and dental societies.

Corrine served St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield in a range of capacities that included teaching church school, ushering, Stephen Ministry and Chancel Guild. For 17 years, she and Elvin provided a “flower ministry,” in which they distributed flowers from Sunday services and funerals to hospitalized and shut-in people.
Corrine is survived by her husband of 60 years, Elvin; their sons: Mark (Christine) of Minnetonka, Keith of Minneapolis; her granddaughter Kaelynn, presently attending college in Iowa; other family members; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her son Kevin in 2014, her sister Elaine Fink and her parents.

Services will be 2:00PM, Friday, September 15, 2017, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service. A reception will follow. Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery, Northfield.

Corrine Heiburg was a fixture in Northfield volunteerism for decades. We got to know her and husband, Elvin at the Northfield Historical Society. Wonderful, enthusiastic and generous people. She will be greatly missed. Our deepest sympathies to Elvin and her family.

I was sorry to learn of Corrine’s death. Since I was a little kid we went to Heiburg’s for our dental care. I enjoyed visiting with Corrine and Elvin and sharing things that were happening in our lives – especially talking about travel. Both of them are very special people.
