Agnes Greene, age 91 of Northfield, passed away with her husband and family by her side on Tuesday morning, June 13, 2017, at the Northfield Hospital. Agnes Mathilda Menard Greene was born October 30, 1925, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, to George and Sadie (Sherman) Menard. She spent most of her childhood in Fairchild, Wisconsin, graduating from high school in 1943. During WWII, Agnes worked at the Pentagon in Washington, DC. Agnes Greene, age 91 of Northfield, passed away with her husband and family by her side on Tuesday morning, June 13, 2017, at the Northfield Hospital.

Agnes Mathilda Menard Greene was born October 30, 1925, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, to George and Sadie (Sherman) Menard. She spent most of her childhood in Fairchild, Wisconsin, graduating from high school in 1943. During WWII, Agnes worked at the Pentagon in Washington, DC. After the war, she taught high school in Maiden Rock, Wisconsin. While in Maiden Rock, she met the love of her life, Johnny Greene. Agnes and Johnny were married on May 6, 1948. They lived in St. Paul for 47 years before moving to Northfield to be closer to family.

Passionate about education, Agnes cofounded the Minnesota Literacy Council and helped countless adults learn to read. Agnes and Johnny also touched the lives of many through their kindness and generosity, opening their home to anyone in need. Agnes’s faith sustained her throughout her life. She and Johnny were members of the Church of St. Dominic.

Survivors include her husband of 69 years John, as well as her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many other extended family and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30AM, Saturday, June 17, 2017, at the Church of St. Dominic in Northfield. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Visitation will be at church on Saturday one hour prior to the funeral.

Memorials are preferred to St. Dominic’s School or the Minnesota Literacy Council.
