Dr. Bernard William Schulte died May 18, 2013 at the age of 97.85 years. Dad, you almost made it to 100! Bernard was born on July 12, 1915 in Greenwald, Minnesota to a farming family of 10 children. Growing up in the depression, he developed an incredible work ethic, a “can do” attitude, and an entrepreneurial spirit. He worked his way through college and dental school and served on a Navy medical ship during World War II. In 1943, he married his love, Collette Maas, and together they had 3 children. After Collette’s early death in 1955 from cancer, Bernard was lucky enough to marry her sister, Dolores who, with her daughter, joined the Schulte family. Bernard practiced dentistry in Minneapolis until his retirement at age 68. He and Dolores had 39 wonderful years together, playing golf with a great group of friends. After her death in 1995, he continued as a bachelor for another 18 years, golfing until he couldn’t see the ball anymore! Dad was one of a kind, the best ever. Even at the end, when things became so difficult, Dad did not complain. Complaining wasn’t in him. He was a family man, a man of strength, endless patience, integrity, faithfulness, love and faith in God. We have been amazingly blessed to have him as a father and know we will see him again one day. He is survived by his four children: Kay Beairsto and husband Richard, Herb Schulte and wife Julie, Mary Sue Schulte, and Martha Vitalari and husband Nick, as well as 11 grand-children and 12 great-grand children. Private funeral services were held at St. Dominic’s Church in Northfield, Minnesota on May 22. A memorial gathering will be planned in late July.

John “Arch” Archibald, age 63 of Northfield, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by the love of family and friends, on Wednesday evening, May 15, 2013.
Arch married Lucy Darrah Archibald on August 14, 1980; they were married 32 years. Their beloved twins Anne Grace and Easton Davis Archibald have just completed their first year of college. The Archibalds have made their home for the past 23 years on Northfield’s east side where their porches overflowed with friends, flowers, and mechanical gear.
Arch was born in Princeton, New Jersey on April 26, 1950. His father was a professor of mechanical engineering at Princeton University during the time when Albert Einstein was on faculty and regularly chatted with Arch’s mother on his way to campus. Arch graduated from high school in New Haven, CT, and received a degree in mining engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Platteville and studied mechanical engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Arch was a man of deep intellect and curiosity. He worked as a miner and a mechanical and mining engineer, and created an engineering consulting practice. His passion for engineering research and development led him to the US Department of Mines, Sheldahl Corporation, the Colorado School of Mines and other top engineering agencies over the course of his career in the US and Canada. In his basement and garage workshops, Arch designed and built steam engines, made significant modifications to the Stirling hot air engine and created a custom motorized vehicle for his children. A tour of Arch’s basement reveals an astronomical clock, a seismograph, a mirror grinding machine, an oscilloscope, a lathe and milling machines. Arch built a 1946 Harley Davidson motorcycle from parts and restored a Model A in which his children enjoyed rumble seat rides. Arch’s many interests included astronomy, physics, optics, Newfoundland, the history of the western US, and fossil hunting. Arch’s friends, family and neighbors will miss the sounds of tinkering and occasional small explosions emanating from his garage workshop.
Above all, Arch loved his wife and children. Arch shared with his children his love of science, peering at Cannon River water samples under microscopes from a young age, fossil hunting, nature walks in the Carleton Arboretum and exploring the night sky. Arch was proud to see his children grow into young adulthood and took particular joy in Anne’s farmer’s market enterprise, Archibald Mills, and Easton’s pursuit of engineering. His canine companion Cavendish – a Boston Terrier (named after the famous physicist), was constantly at his side. Arch loved Lucy deeply and found ways to express that love even at the end of his life when words were no longer available to him.
Arch was a loyal friend and enjoyed deep relationships throughout his life. He and Lucy are grateful to those whose phone calls, late night walks, and bedside conversations sustained and supported them.
Arch is survived by his dear wife Lucy and beloved children Anne and Easton, his siblings Frank (Dawn) of State College, PA, Robert of Needham, MA, Barbara Cinquini of Naples, FL, and Margaret (William) Moran of Fayetteville, PA. Arch is preceded in death by his parents Marion and Frank Archibald.
A celebration of Arch’s life will be held at 10AM on Saturday, May 25, 2013, at First United Church of Christ in Northfield. Visitation will be 3-7 PM Friday, May 24, 2013, at the Benson & Langehough Funeral Home in Northfield. Memorials are preferred to the Archibald Twins College Fund at First National Bank in Northfield.
