Joseph Stam, age 74 of Gonzales, Louisiana, formerly of Northfield, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Gonzales on Friday, April 7, 2017.
Joseph Raymond Stam was born March 30, 1943, in Faribault, Minnesota, to Charles and Marian (Fremouw) Stam, Sr. He was raised in Northfield and graduated from Northfield High School in 1961. Following high school he volunteered for service in the US Navy. During the Vietnam Conflict he served with the 155th Attack Squadron Silver Foxes where he earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal & a Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon. Following his honorable discharge in November 1966 he returned to Northfield, MN.
On July 22, 1967, Joe married Anita Elsie Hoefs at Solor Lutheran Church in Webster. After marriage they made their home in Dundas and Joe worked construction with his father for College City Construction. In 1975, they moved to Houston, Texas and Joe worked for Shell Oil. In 1981 they returned to Minnesota for a year before moving to the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area. Joe operated his own environmental consulting service until retiring. Joe was an avid fisherman and more than anything in this world he loved his family and grandchildren. Joe was kind, generous, and a friend to everyone he met. Joe always had a story to tell and his audiences enjoyed them all. He will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years Anita, his son Yancey (Jennifer) of Farmington, his daughter Angela (Daniel Neck) of Baton Rouge, his grandchildren Joseph and James Stam, Sarah and Laura Neck, his brothers Charles Jr. (Colleen) of Faribault, James (Sharon) of Cannon Falls, his sisters Charlotte Berres of Webster, Linda (Vern) Nelson of Waterville, Donna (Greg) Elwood of Owatonna; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be at 11:00AM, Saturday, April 15, 2017, at Solor Lutheran Church in Webster. Interment with Military Honors will be in Solor Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7PM Friday, April 14, 2017, at the Benson & Langehough Funeral Home in Northfield. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday one hour prior to the funeral.
