Nancy Casper, age 78 of Northfield, passed away Friday morning, February 3, 2017, at Three Links Care Center.
Nancy Carolyn Peterson Casper was born April 3, 1938, in Sacred Heart, Minnesota, to Alvin and Tyne (Waataja) Peterson. She graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1956 and attended X-ray technical school at Abbott Hospital in Minneapolis. In 1962, she moved with her family to Northfield. Nancy was a stay-at-home mom until the early 1970’s when she became the store manager for Sundance Outfitters in downtown Northfield. On August 25, 1979, Nancy married Barry “Mike” Casper. In 1987, she began working at the Carleton College library, where she stayed until 2006. Mike passed away on January 7, 2007.
Nancy was a member of the United Church of Christ and many community organizations, including Women Against Military Madness. A deeply committed political activist, Nancy devoted countless hours and boundless energy to the causes she believed in, particularly the social justice and peace movements. She was an avid reader, enjoyed cooking, weaving, gardening, and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include her children, Jay Syverson of Minneapolis, Kaarin Madigan of Maple Grove, Aaron Syverson of Plantation, Florida; step-sons Daniel Casper (Linda Sone) of Lauderdale, Benjamin Casper-Sanchez (Marisela) of Northfield, Michael Casper (Beth) of Eugene, Oregon; grandchildren Brad Madigan, Ellen Madigan, Erin Madigan, Daniel and Alejandra Casper-Sanchez, Eli and Ewan Casper; great-grandson, Mason; her sister, Sandy Retzloff of San Antonio, Texas; her brothers Dennis (Mary Ann) Peterson of Maple Grove, Randall (Sadia) Peterson of Champlin; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 11 at the UCC Church in Northfield. Doors will be open at 10:00 AM for anyone wishing to meet with family members before the ceremony. A light lunch will be served following the ceremony.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Casper-Wellstone Fund benefitting the Social Justice Internships.
