Lois Alward (MacGregor) Messner was born on November 9, 1924, in New York City to Lawrence J. and Mary E. (Childs) MacGregor.  She grew up in Chatham, New Jersey, and graduated from Kent Place School in Summit, New Jersey, in 1942. She attended Stanford University in Palo Alto and the University of Chicago, graduating with an MA in French.  She attended graduate school at NYU for her teaching certificate and taught for one year at St. Margaret’s School in Waterbury, Connecticut.

Lois married Charles Messner on June 24, 1954, in Chatham at the First Congregational Church and the couple moved to Northfield where Charles began his career as Professor of French at Carleton College.  Lois was a secretary at Carleton, serving the Music Department, the English Department, the College Committees, and finally the Board of Trustees.  She retired in1990.  She was an active member of the Margaret Evans Huntington Literary Society at Carleton and the First United Church of Christ.  She was a fanatical reader of detective stories.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Charles; sister-in-law Mary MacGregor of Chatham; niece Margaret of Springfield, Ohio; 3 nephews: John (Kate) MacGregor of Dover, New Hampshire, Andrew MacGregor of Chatham, David (Liesl) MacGregor of North Andover, Massachusetts; and many friends.  She was preceded in death by parents, and brothers Samuel and Robin MacGregor.

Lois passed away with her husband by her side on Wednesday evening, December 18, 2013, at Parkview East of the Northfield Retirement Community, at the age of 89.

A celebration of Lois’ life will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, December 23, 2013, at the First United Church of Christ in Northfield with Rev. Todd Lippert-Smith officiating.  Music will be provided by Theo Wee.  Interment will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Northfield.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorials are preferred to the Northfield Retirement Community.
