Ina M. Carlson was born April 8, 1921, in Watertown, South Dakota, to Carl L. and Jennie Carlson. She was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church, graduated from Watertown High School in 1939 and attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls S.D. After her education she returned Watertown, beginning her professional career as a secretary for Grace Lutheran Church, a receptionist, a secretary and Women’s Program Director at the radio station KWAT, and various capacities at First Citizens Bank.
In 1948, she moved to Minneapolis and worked at Augsburg Publishing House as a secretary and Advertising Department Merchandise Coordinator. She retired from Augsburg on July 31, 1987.
Ina enjoyed photographing her nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces as they grew from children to adults. In documenting the time as it passed, she always sent her family elaborate birthday cards filled with stickers, colorful construction paper and, of course, a number of dollar bills that matched their age. Not a day went by without Ina wearing the color pink – except perhaps Sundays, when she donned her beloved purple jersey to cheer on the Minnesota Vikings.
This extended family filled countless happy days with Ina. She spent many holidays and special occasions with her brother Jolly’s family, never failing to bring her sharp wit as well as her famous chocolate chip cookies. She was a member of Lake Nokomis Lutheran Church in Minneapolis (and later Bethel Lutheran Church in Northfield, MN), and an active volunteer for Nokomis Square Cooperative, Lupus organizations, the American Swedish Institute and other charitable organizations.
Survivors include her nephews Barry, Gary, Greg and Jeff Carlson, Richard Rognas; her nieces Kristin Stets, Shirley Ann Brood and Sue Ellen Mann; as well as many great nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers John A. and Robert “Jolly” Carlson, and her sisters Anna L. Carlson and Margaret Rognas.
Ina passed away with her family by her side on Saturday evening, October 12, 2013, at the Northfield Hospital Long Term Care Center. She was 92.
