Leonard Earl DeWolfe was born August 15, 1922, on the family farm in Northfield Township, Rice County, Minnesota, to Earl and Betty (Hillestad) DeWolfe. He was baptized and confirmed at Dennison Lutheran Church, attended country school, and graduated from Northfield High School in 1939. Following his education he continued farming with his father. Leonard married Marie Adlyn Halvorson on February 11, 1942, at the Parsonage of Dennison Lutheran Church. After marriage Leonard and Marie were farming partners in Northfield Township. Along with farming, Leonard also worked several years at St. Olaf College and the Northfield Safety Center. Leonard and Marie remained on the farm until moving into Northfield in 2005. Marie passed away on April 1, 2006. For the past year and a half Leonard has been a resident of Parkview East at the Northfield Retirement Community and the family would like to extend a special thanks for the care and concern he received.
Leonard was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where he had been active in many capacities including as a deacon and usher. Over the years he was active in various farm organizations and Cannon Valley Lions Club. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, playing cards, traveling with Marie and visiting with people. He was hardworking, caring, compassionate, social and had a great sense of humor and quick wit. Family was his number one priority and he loved spending time with his wife, children, grand and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his children: Gerald and wife Ellen of Ellsworth, Wisconsin, Barbara and husband Edward Babel of Mankato, Thomas of Northfield, Paul and wife Debra of Zimmerman, Lynette and husband Alan Marks of Northfield, Marcia and husband Chris Peterson of Northfield; 11 grandchildren Kathryn DeWolfe, Diane (Brett) Arnold, Christopher (Lisa) Babel, Sara Holter, Berent DeWolfe, Angela (Thomas) Tanghe, Melissa LaCroix, Nathan Marks, Emily (Aaron) Langan, Tyler (Amanda) Peterson, Maren Peterson (fiancee Adam Cote); 14 great-grandchildren: Jonathan and Noah Reutzel, Miranda Arnold, Ethan, Noah and Drew Babel, Taylor Malecha, Max Holter, Leo and Tyler DeWolfe, Jake Tanghe, Madison Gillis, Beau and Ellery LaCroix; his sister-in-law, Carol DeWolfe of Redwood Falls; nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Marie, his brother Herb and his parents.
Leonard passed away with his family by his side on Saturday afternoon, October 5, 2013, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, at the age of 91.
Funeral services will be 10:30AM Friday, October 11, 2013, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield with Rev. Mark Johnson officiating. Music will be provided by John Ferguson and Michelle Knutson. Interment will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Northfield. Casket bearers will be Gerald DeWolfe, Thomas DeWolfe, Paul DeWolfe, Edward Babel, Alan Marks and Chris Peterson. Visitation will be 4-7PM Thursday, October 10, 2013, at the Benson & Langehough Funeral Home in Northfield and at church one hour prior to the service.
Memorials are preferred to St. John’s Foundation or St. John’s Radio Fund.
