Larry Kent Petterson was born August 15, 1929, in Madelia, Minnesota, to Clarence and Helen (Thompson) Petterson. He was baptized on October 13, 1929, and confirmed on July 18, 1943, at LaSalle Lutheran Church. He graduated from St. James High School in 1947 and joined the US Army in October 1948, serving in the States and England. Following his honorable discharge in October 1951, he enrolled in Mankato State Teacher’s College for one year and then transferred to the University of Minnesota. On September 5, 1953, Larry married Avis Peterson, at Albion Lutheran Church at Godahl. After marriage he continued his studies at the University, graduating with a Business Degree in 1955. Larry worked for IBM and they made their home in Bloomington until moving to Northfield in 1965. Larry served as Director of Administrative Computer Services at St. Olaf College until retiring in 1988.
Larry was a longtime member of Bethel Lutheran Church. He enjoyed spending time on his computer, golf, sports (especially playing when he was a younger man) and following the activities of his sons and grandchildren. He was kind, courageous, a wonderful family man who loved being a grandfather and always enjoyed the time he spent with his friends.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Avis; 3 sons and their spouses: Todd and Katrina of Red Wing, Luke and Karen of Lakeville, Eric of Burnsville; 5 grandchildren: Matthew, Andrew, Laura, Adam, Christian; 2 sisters: Norma Joramo of Minneapolis, Sandra (David) Becthold of White Bear Lake; sisters-in-law, Janet Petterson of Albertville, Phyllis Madson of Edina, Janet Peterson of Park Rapids, Audrey Peterson of Eden Prairie; brother-in-law, James (Trudell) Peterson of Madelia; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Cleon and Paul, and brothers-in-law Richard and Lee Peterson, Burt Joramo and Norm Madson.
Larry passed away with his wife by his side on Saturday evening, September 28, 2013, at his home in Northfield, at the age of 84.
A Service of Resurrection will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, October 4, 2013, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Northfield with Rev. Tim McDermott officiating. Music will be provided by Rhonda Reece. Interment with Military Honors will be in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis. Honorary pall bearers are his grandchildren. Visitation will be at the Benson & Langehough Funeral Home in Northfield from 4-7PM on Thursday, October 3, 2013, and at church one hour prior to the service.
Memorials are preferred to Bethel Lutheran Church, St. Olaf College or Northfield Hospice.
