Shirley Mae Hangen was born into life on May 6, 1930, the only child of Frank and Selma Diebal in St. Louis, Missouri. She was baptized and confirmed at Hope Lutheran Church in South St. Louis.
In 1950, she met Bill Hangen, and they were married June 13, 1953. Their path was formed in a partnership of sensibility and respect which was philosophically sustained throughout their many years together.
Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Huntsville, Alabama, where Bill was in the service for two years and Shirley worked as program manager at Radio Station WBHP. They then moved to Orange, New Jersey, and then Clarkston, Michigan. In 1964, they moved to Northfield, and raised their four children, Rick, Lori, Jill and Kurt.
Shirley was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Along with holding offices in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, she belonged to the morning Bible Study Group for years (finding much joy and comfort from it), lay reader and church choir. Over the years she was involved as a Brownie Scout leader, Hospital Auxiliary, Christmas Sharing and was the first female board member of the Northfield Hockey Association.
Shirley’s great joy in life were her family and friends. She loved to be with people and especially her grandchildren. Traveling was always a pleasure – especially the trips taken with Bill. She was an avid reader – reading to her grandchildren was a favorite past time, along with enjoying all styles of music and theater. She enjoyed collecting antiques from all over. She made her biggest mark on the world as a devoted wife, parent and grandparent.
Following a extended illness with leukemia, , Shirley passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on September 26, 2013, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Bill; 4 children: Rick of Tampa Florida, Lori (Bruce) Young of Northfield, Jill (Ron) Mask of Plymouth, Kurt (Amber) of Rush City; 6 grandchildren: Alex and Bridget Hangen, Gwen and Brandon Young, Jacob Mask, Sabrina Hangen; other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Services will be 11:00AM Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Northfield with Rev. Brent Klein officiating. Interment will be in Rolling Green Cemetery, Bridgewater Township. Honorary Pall Bearers are her grandchildren. Visitation will be 4-7PM Monday, September 30, 2013, at the Benson & Langehough Funeral Home in Northfield and at church one hour prior to the funeral.
