Deane Edgar Richardson was born May 17, 1918, in Rankin, Illinois, to Kline and Ruth (Tracy) Richardson and was raised in Peoria, Illinois. He graduated Peoria High School in 1936 and Bradley University in Peoria in 1941. He moved to California to attended Stanford University and during that time joined the US Army Air Corp. in January 1943. He served as a physical education and wounded reconditioning officer. Following his honorable discharge in April 1946, he returned to California. He graduated Stanford with a Doctorate in Education and begin teaching and coaching at University of the Pacific. Deane married Phyllis Sorem on August 21, 1949, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield. After marriage they continued living in California and Deane took a faculty position at UCLA where he served as freshman basketball coach under John Wooden. In 1959, they moved to Denver where he taught and chaired the Physical Education Department at the University of Denver. In 1963, they moved to Fridley and Deane taught and chaired the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department for Men at the University of Minnesota. In 1970 they moved to Tempe-Mesa where he again taught and chaired the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department at Arizona State University. He retired in 1983 and in 1991 they moved to Rapid City. In 1995, they moved to the Twin Cities to be closer to their children and grandchildren. In April 2002 they moved to Northfield. Phyllis passed away on April 18, 2003.
Over the years, in their different locations, Deane served as congregational president and for many years in the US Air Force Reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. In Northfield, Deane was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and taught fitness classes at the Northfield Retirement Community. He was a physical fitness enthusiast and enjoyed hiking, camping and being outdoors. He followed the Golden Gophers and loved both telling and listening to stories.
Survivors include his children: Paul of Montgomery, Laurie and husband Ralph Johnson of Richfield, Mark and wife Julie of Dresser, Wisconsin; 9 grandchildren: Matthew (Katie), Anna (Jason), Maria (Jason), Daniel, Rebecca (Eric), Mari, Andrew, Nicole and Heather. One great-granddaughter, Sophie; one sister, Maryanna Zehr of Eden Prairie; nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and his brother Kline.
Deane passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday evening, September 22, 2013, in his home on the campus of the Northfield Retirement Community, at the age of 95.
A Celebration of Deane’s Life will be held 2:00 PM Friday, September 27, 2013, at the Chapel of the Northfield Retirement Community with Revs. Kristine Braaten-Lee and Tim McDermott officiating. Music will be provided by Rhonda Reese and Anton Armstrong of Bethel and by family members. Interment will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Northfield. Visitation will be at the NRC Chapel on Friday, one hour prior to the service.
Memorials are preferred to Northfield Retirement Community (fitness, grounds, chapel) or Bethel Lutheran Church.
