Agnes Mary Zelenka Minar was born September 27, 1919, in New Prague, Minnesota, to Alois and Anna (Novotny) Zelenka. She was baptized, made her first communion, and was confirmed at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, and graduated from New Prague High School in 1937. After her education she worked as a housekeeper for her aunt. On November 15, 1938, Agnes married Wenceslaus J. (Jim) Minar at St. Wenceslaus Church. After marriage they bought a farm in Greenvale Township where they farmed and raised their family. Following Jim’s death in 1976, Agnes remained on the farm and worked as the St. Dominic Rectory cook for 15 years. In December 2004, she moved to the Three Links Campus in Northfield.

Agnes was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, the Rosary Society, and a former board member of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, as well as a regular volunteer at St. Dominic School. She was a founding member of Birth Right, the local chapter of Right to Life.  She spent many years as a 4-H leader. She was a talented seamstress; after sewing for her family, she made baby blankets and kimonos for those in need. Agnes was an avid flower and vegetable gardener, a fantastic baker, and she loved her chickens.

Survivors include 7 children: Mary Ann (Michael) Damm of Madison, Wisconsin, Sister Kathryn OSF of Rochester, Barbara (Ronald) MacDonald of Bemidji, James of Northfield, Monica Boe of Ada, Oklahoma, Agnes Paul of Portland, Oregon, Geralyn (Michael) Lindblom of Mankato; 17 grandchildren: Michael Damm, Jacqueline Damm (John Groener), Jennifer (Michael) Philbin, Christopher (Jennifer) Damm, Jeffrey (Amber) Damm, Timothy Damm, Angela, Joseph and Mark Minar, Eric and Meredith Boe, James (Cheryl) Paul, John (Sarah) Paul, Stephen and Kevin Paul, Heather and Jennifer Lindblom; 12 great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Bernice Zelenka of New Prague; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; her daughters Margaret and Ann; her great-grandson Timothy Pharoah Damm; her daughter-in-law, Barbara Minar; her son-in-law, Dennis Boe; her parents and her brothers George and Alois Zelenka.

Agnes passed away with family by her side on Friday evening, February 15, 2013, at the Three Links Care Center in Northfield, at the age of 93.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00AM on Thursday, February 21, 2013, at the Church of St. Dominic in Northfield with Fr. Dennis Dempsey officiating. Music will be provided by St. Dominic’s Choir and Agnes’ nephew Jerry Minar. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Northfield. Casket bearers will be Agnes’ grandchildren. Visitation will be at 4-7 PM Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at the Benson & Langehough Funeral Home. Visitation will continue at the church on Thursday one hour prior to the funeral.

Memorials are preferred to St. Dominic’s School and Bethlehem Academy.

Arrangements are with Benson & Langehough Funeral Home.
