Stanley Olaf Nelson was born October 13, 1914, on the family farm at Union Lake near Little Chicago, Minnesota, to Oscar and Emma (Rapp) Nelson. He was baptized at Trondhjem Lutheran Church in Lonsdale, attended country school in Little Chicago, and was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield. Following his education worked as a farmhand for area farmers. On August 27, 1940, Stanley married Lyda Sandmann at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Webster. After marriage they farmed in the Webster area until 1954, when they purchased their farm in Waterford Township near Northfield. In 1957, along with their close friends Ray and Elvah Fossum, they founded the Waterford Meat Market. In 1965, they sold their interest in the market. Throughout his life Stanley worked and remained active, continuing to help on the farm well into his 80’s. Lyda passed away on November 29, 1988. Stanley remained on the farm until moving to Northfield in 2007.
